“The question may arise, why should we study classical Tibetan in Hungary? The teaching and learning of classical Tibetan has always been something of a personal spiritual matter in our country, thanks to the fact that the entire discipline was founded by Sándor Kőrösi Csoma, who researched the origins of the Hungarian people during his travels in Asia in the first half of the 19th century. His work proved to be exemplary in the fields of Oriental studies and Buddhist research. We can say that thanks to Csoma, the often-mentioned Hungarian intellectual contribution to a given science was also significant in these areas. Those who study the Tibetan language also cultivate this intellectual heritage to some extent. This activity is an important part of the mission of the Dharma Gate Buddhist College, which publishes the present volumes.
On the other hand, learning classical Tibetan—as strange as it may sound—creates a living connection with the teachings of the Buddha himself, one of the most unique and sacred traditions and cultural horizons of Buddhism, and its unparalleled philosophical heritage, which to this day takes a living form in Tibetan monasteries, practice centers, lamas, rinpoches, and their teachings around the world. Those who master classical Tibetan gain access to one of the richest and most diverse worlds of Buddhist thought and practice. This can be understood literally: with its unique characteristics and “flavor,” the language offers a true initiation into the complex Buddhist teachings and practices, making each teaching a little deeper and the experience more immediate. Tibetan culture and language are one of the most unique carriers of Buddhism, and learning about and mastering them can be an exciting experience for all practitioners and philosophers.
Dr. Rita Kuzder, professor at the Dharma Gate Buddhist College, has created a unique work, or rather works, with her two-volume publication: the Classical Tibetan Language Textbook and the Classical Tibetan Exercise Book help students learn the language in a way never seen before, based on the teacher’s living language teaching practice developed over the past decade and the new teaching methodology developed in the process. With its numerous innovations and novelties, its aids and methods of implementation, the publication is a unique achievement in the field of foreign language teaching in Hungary and deserves the immediate attention of language lovers, language learners, and language teachers.
Both book covers are the joint work of two thangka painters, Sahil Bhopal and Tashi Mannox.
