In January 2021, Gábor Karsai, rector of our college, was elected director of Mind & Life Europe. Mind & Life Europe, founded in 1987 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, philosopher and neuroscientist Francisco Varela, and lawyer and businessman Adam Engle, Life Institute, founded in 1987 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, philosopher Francisco Varela, and lawyer and businessman Adam Engle, was established in 2008 and serves as a European workshop and research platform for contemplative science, which studies human consciousness and the mind in an interdisciplinary manner, unfolding in a dialogue between neuroscience, meditation practice, and the phenomenological philosophical tradition. Gábor Karsai has been a member of the organization since 2016, prior to his return to the College in 2018, and in recent years he has supported the work of the European organization with strategic advice, leading workshops, and managing internal organizational transformation processes. Due to the retirement of former director Cornelius Pietzner at the end of 2020, with the help of leading European research companies, the organization’s board of trustees selected Gábor Karsai from more than 20 candidates, who accepted the honorary position, confident that his involvement will help make the plans for the European programs of the Tan Kapuja Buddhist College more successful.
