When it comes up in conversation that the Buddhist principle of “non-harming” should be applied in everyday life, leading to the justification for following a vegan diet, we often receive the question: “Okay, but what should I eat then?”

The best answer is to cook and offer delicious, healthy vegan food, rather than engaging in lengthy verbal persuasion. This is the core principle of the Buddhist vegan cafeteria, which offers vegan snacks to our own community—DGBC students, staff, and Church members.

  • Various Buddhist monasteries have always shaped their diet according to their own practices. In some places, they acquire their food through daily begging, and naturally, they eat what they receive. Tibetan monasteries, due to the climate and natural conditions of Tibet, do not follow a vegetarian diet. However, Chinese, Korean, and other self-sustaining monasteries all require vegan eating.
