Dr. György Balikó

Lecturer at Dharma Gate Buddhist College
(philosophy, history of philosophy)
I graduated in philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), where I later obtained my doctoral degree as well. Since then, the abbreviation “PhD” has adorned my name in official places—the Doctor of Useless Sciences.
Where did I put the book?
After finishing university, I first worked in an antiquarian bookstore, then I joined Dharma Gate Buddhist College, where—apart from minor breaks—I have been teaching ever since. Within the College, I am an instructor in the Religious Philosophy specialization (VB), teaching courses on the history of philosophy and various fields of philosophy (metaphysics, philosophy of religion). I contribute to the diversity of VB by being the gray spot on the palette—a typical humanities scholar in the worst sense of the term. I spend most of my life surrounded by books and cats. If I’m not reading, I’m thinking about what I have read or what I should read next. Sometimes, I even wonder where I put the book I was reading. I don’t particularly enjoy teaching; I’d rather sit on the other side, among the students—if this wish came true, I would certainly skip my own classes, and I would never choose myself as the supervisor for my thesis.
Essay and literature
My academic work is limited to the absolute minimum necessary. I see the constraints of academic style like a fashionable piece of clothing that is tight everywhere—if I don’t have to, I won’t wear it. Therefore, on the rare occasions I write, I prefer essays and literature. Fortunately, I enjoy reading much more than writing, so there is no need to fear that I will flood the book market with my literary creations in the near future.
